OPEN CALL: COST Action IS1104 - “The EU in the new complex geography of economic systems: models, tools and policy evaluation” (Gecomplexity)

The COST Action IS1104 “The EU in the new complex geography of economic systems: models, tools and policy evaluation” invites members applications to the first 2014 call for Short term Scientific Missions (STSMS) in order to develop linkages and scientific collaborations between participating institutions involved in the Action. Application deadline is 15th of April 2014 (but it could be extended depending on the availability of funds).


Strengthening the existing networks by allowing scientists to go to an institution in another COST Country to foster collaboration (e.g to draft proposals, undertake research etc.). STSMs are particularly intended for young scientists.


From 5 to 60 days within the second year of the COST Action (i.e., within the period from the 07th of March 2014 until the 23rd of May 2014).


Normally a postgraduate student or postdoctoral fellow or staff member in an institution actively participating in the COST ACTION. Early Stage Researchers (less than PhD + 8 years) will be prioritized.


A STSM may only be approved:

  • from a home institution in a COST participating country to a host institution in another COST participating country or to a formally approved host institution in a non-COST country;
  • from a formally approved home institution in a Near Neighbour country to a host institution in a COST participating country.

Selection procedure

The criteria used for assessment of applications will be:

  • the relevance to the project according to the objectives of the COST Action IS 1104;
  • the quality of the application.
  • no more than two applications are allowed for each grant period.
  • priority will be given to Early Stage Researchers.

The STSMs coordinator and the Chair of the Action will assess each application and make the final decision.

Financial Support

The aim of this grant is to support the costs associated with the exchange visit. This grant will not necessarily cover all expenses; it is intended only as a contribution to the travel and subsistence costs of the participant.

As approved by the Action Management Committee the following fixed rule will be applied:

400€ (flat rate) for the travel and 100€ for each day of the STSM. The total amount granted will not exceed 2500€

Application procedure

The Applicant should:

  1. obtain the agreement of the host institution, before submitting his/her application;
  2. use the on-line registration tool to register his/her request for an STSM (see;
  3. after registration, download the formal STSM application and complete it with supporting documentation (CV, full workplan, list of publications, motivation letter, letter of support from the home institute etc.);
  4. send the application by e-mail as attachment to the future Host institution of the STSM and to the Action STSM Coordinator : Prof. Laura Gardini

After completion of the STSM

After the completion of the STSM the grantee is required to submit a short scientific report about the visit to the host institution and to the STSM coordinator within 4 weeks (and, in any case, no later than the 24 of May 2014) after the completion of his/her stay. It should contain the following information:

  • the purpose of the STSM
  • a description of the work carried out during the STSM
  • a description of the main results obtained
  • future collaboration with host institution (if applicable)
  • confirmation by the host institution of the successful execution of the STSM
